I have a 10 mos old male Westie, who is set to be neutered on 05/25. He is very energetic and is played with a lot. However, he has this obsession with shadows, as soon as he sees one, he chases it and won't stop! He exhausts himself and us trying not to let him see them! What can be done to help this? Also, when we let him out the back door, he barks LOUDLY until one of us goes outside with him? How can we stop this behavior. In desparate need of help! PLEASE.

Webmaster comments   Hi Julie;

Congratulations on your Westie puppy. It would be very hard for us to comment appropriately without seeing your 10 month old in action. It would be best to seek out a Certified Animal Behaviorist in your area. Go on the internet and type in; Certified Animal Behaviorist and your city. There could be several reasons why your puppy is behaving in this manner. Make sure he is healthy with a Vet visit and blood test and then seek out the professional. Before this becomes a learned response or habit, do seek professional help, guidance and training. You will be happier and so will your puppy in the long run.

Good luck and let us hear back from you.

What is the westie diet?
9 April 2006

Webmaster comments   Hi There Lynn;

You can check-out the 'Westie Diet' via our homepage, just left hand subject line click on 'WESTIE DIET'. There you can read about how it has helped various dogs (not only for Westies!). We tell you where you can obtain the ingredients and how to change over your dog's food so they do not get diarrhea or an upset tummy.

Thanks for your question and let us know how your dog does.

Webmaster comments   Hello Colleen;

It truly is a work of love. I am a little slanted in my personal view....but Westies are the Best-ies!

Thank you for your kind and appreciated words.

My westie is 9 months old and he recently has been vomitting yellow foamy vomit, mostly in the afternoon. We have taken him to the vet and they put him on Amoxicilin and yet he still is vomitting every so often. Should I be concerned?
6 March 2006

Webmaster comments   Hello Marie;

Yes, you should be conderned. Yellow bile is because the dog needs additional smaller meals throughout the day. Are you on the Westie Diet? If not you should really consider slowly starting this diet. With a puppy (under 12 months) you can prepare a bowl and divide it in half. The ingredients are wonderful and your dog will process them great.

The dog's stomach is empty and the bile to breakdown the food is there but no food.

You can use OTC (Over The Counter) product of Pepto-Bismol one caplet when vomitting occurs. But, the caplet needs to be swallowed 'whole'. So, you can open the dogs jaws and push the caplet all the way to the back of the throat (side) hold the mouth shut and rub the area which we could call the Adam's Apple. This will make the dog swallow. Should do the trick. Aside: the puppys stool may be a blackish color in a day or two, don't worry about that.

Thanks for the question. Let us hear from you again on changing the diet/food.

I got my 16 month old westie 4 months ago and she has the signs described on the diet page. The vet suggested Science Diet Z/D U;tra-allergen free food, but it hasn't helped in 8 weeks. Can I give her her regular food in the morning and her diet in the evening? Or is the westie diet intended to replace her regular food (it says feed 1x a day)? Thanks!
1 March 2006

Webmaster comments   Hello Patty;

Thank you for the question. A 'bowl' of our Westie Diet can be split in half. Feeding one half in the AM and the other in the PM. Just refrigerate the remaining half. We do not recommend substitutions to the diet.

Not sure if you are asking, but a 1.4 month female can be fed only once. She is NOT a puppy after 12 months. Check our other posts here under guest log for our suggested AM Vitamins and biscuits which will help suppliment the once a day feeding she should be on.

Additional questions can be directed to our email address via the website. Make sure to keep her paw and pad fur removed/clipped close, also groom and bath regularly. Always, blow drying her coat. Use the appropriate shampoo (Bio-Groom Wiry Coat, texturizing, tearless for double coated breeds). Let us know how you are doing.

Hi! I just wanted to tell everyone about our wonderful westie rescue. We have had Lucy and Snoopy for one year and can't imagine how we survived without them. Long story-- short (er), they were given up by their owner in Atlanta. They were 4 and 6 at the time. Originally we thought that we wanted one small 1 or 2 year old dog. So when we were contacted about 2 middle aged Westies, we weren't sure if it would be the right thing for us. The first time we met them they ran into our laps and started licking our hands and faces. Then Snoops peed on the rescue rep's. foot ...and I knew these were the dogs for us! :) They are wonderful, energetic, well behaved, fun friendly LOVING dogs who easily adapted to our lax rules -- such as full access to all furniture and ample access to squeaky toys. They are super mellow- great will other dogs, cats, kids and people. They rarely bark. While they were not "perfect" -- Lucy wasn't well housebroken and Snoopy has some allergies that make him a bit itchy-- (little things that have improved with time, training and a change in diet) their spirits and personalities far outweigh those small inconveniences. I guess my point is -- rescueing my westies has been a wonderful experience. I would especially like to suggest that folks should really consider older dogs. Westie Rescue is a great place to start. We'll that's all!
