My 2 year old female westie, who is of course wonderful.gets extremely moody, hesitant, skiddish when we cook lamb. We did so about 5 days ago and she sat on the couch shaking, wouldn't come in the kitchen, wouldn't touch a piece of the meat, completely shunned us. I thought she was nervous about something else. It took about 24 hours to get over. So we cooked the other chops tonight.the same thing happened. She won't come in the kitchen, she won't leave my husband's lap (and he cooked the lamb), she peeks around corners, she is just odd! This has never happened before with any other food or in any other circumstance. Can somebody advise what is wrong with my little girl? Thanks

Webmaster comments   Well Merry;

Never have heard of this! It's a new one on me.

One thing however, there is a disease that exhibits the same shaking, non-eating, etc. It is called White Shakkers Syndrome. It may be just a coincidence that you were serving lamb when she had an episode. Please take her to the Veterinarian and have her checked out thoroughly.

You can read about Westie health issues on our website so that you are prepared when you see your Veterinarian.

Please let us hear from you again. Thank you for sharing with our guest list.

my westie (buster) died of intestinal cancer oct 21st. a week ago a friend surprised me with a 3month old puppy (leo). i never had allergy problems with buster but since getting leo i have been covered in a skin rash. could you help me? is this a common problem? needless to say, i'm devastated by this.

Webmaster comments   Hi Suzanne;

Congratulations on your new addition, LEO. Without seeing your Westie it is very hard to comment appropriately regarding your skin rash.

Certainly take the dog to a Veterinarian for a skin scraping and any other appropriate test. Did you possibly just apply topical Frontline-Plus on the dog? That might have caused a skin rash reaction.

And you should see a medical doctor to pinpoint what has caused your skin rash.

This personal skin rash is not a common occurance in our breed. Hope this helps.

I have an 11 month old Westie who is beginning to scratch and bite his feet. Since I have had a Westie 20 years ago who had to be put to sleep because of her skin problems, I am trying most of the products you recommend for the Westie diet. If I put my Westie on the Westie diet now, will it prevent the horrible skin condition I have previously experienced and will it be a lifelong diet for my little guy!

Webmaster comments   Hello Sandy;

We recommend the 'total' diet, with NO EXCEPTIONS be fed, one bowl mixed at a time.

This diet can be given from the age of 6-9 months, depending upon the dog's maturity throughout it's life.

There can be and are several reasons, in addition to diet that causes feet licking (i.e. improper feet and pad grooming/trimming, fertalizer, wet grass, shampoo residue, etc). The diet certainly helps systemacily the dog's system. Exterior factors need to be addressed as well.

We are sure you have found there are many changes in Westie ownership 20 years ago and now.

If you obtained your Westie directly from his breeder, you may wish to contact them in writing detailing the condition before the dog is 12 months of age (California Lemon Pet Law). Ask specifically for genetic information regarding heretiary conditions within the pedigree line.

Hope this helps.

Just dropping by to say hello and thank you. We were adopted by Maddie nearly 3 years ago and we are so happy to have a westie running our lives! As our family has expanded she has continued to bring nothing but joy and endless laughter. I would like to applaud the efforts of westie rescue for their tireless efforts to bring these beloved animals to their forever homes. We are truly grateful that we have her, because although we "rescued" her it was really she who rescued us. Thanks again. All our love Kris & Jenni Boudreau

Webmaster comments   Cheers to our Australia Westie Friends....thanks for viewing our site. We recently sent the Westie Diet supplies over to a client in Australia! Guess the ingredients were hard to obtain there.

I've been doing a lot of research about adopting a Westie, which is how I found this awesome website. I'm absolutely in love with them! Keep up the good work! Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to provide one a forever home.

The Westie Diet says to feed once a day, but my Lucy is used to twice per day. I already use the Nutro dog food, so the rest of the supplements will be added a bit at a time. Can I split this into two feedings, or will the food go bad? My Westie has some thyroid problems, and seems to do better on the two feedings, since she is always hungry.

Webmaster comments   Hello Sue and Lucy;

Glad you are trying our Westie Diet. As per the instructions on our website you may make a bowl, then split it in half. Just remember to refrigerate the remaining half....then warm it prior to serving.

Let us know how Lucy does! Thanks for visiting our website.

I just recently found your website and am positively enchanted with it! My husband and I lost our beloved Pearl on August 23rd after 17 1/2 years of love and all the wonderful things that Westies give to humans. Visiting your website somehow makes me feel better; I'm hoping to adopt another very soon.
