If you are considering adopting a Westie, please read the entire content of this section, prior to clicking onto the 'application' link.

NOTE: All rescues, within our program, are in volunteer foster care homes, located in the eight (8) states we serve.  We do not maintain a facility or a shelter.  Available dog's photos and their stories may be viewed on this website. Visitation, once a potential adoptive match is thought to be found, is by "Meet and Greet" invitation appointment only.

1. Either

A. Print out this application by CLICKING HERE for a Adobe PDF formatted application, (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). Then fill out the form, prepare a personal cover letter* and mail with a $10.00 donation check to offset our processing costs, payable to: Westie Rescue of CA, anfpo, to the PO Box address on the application. Complete all the information requested on the form. Failing to do so will only delay your application.

B. If you don't have a printer, or Internet access, simply write to our P O Box requesting a Westie Rescue of California 'Adoption Application Package', include a $10.00 donation check, which helps defray our processing costs (i.e. postage, envelopes, copies, paper, telephone, etc.).  Make the check payable to: Westie Rescue of CA, anfpo.  Send to:  Westie Rescue of CA, Post Office Box 2822, El Cajon, CA  92021-0822

*You may wish to include a cover letter with additional information about your family, enjoyed activities, expectations about a dog, other companion pet temperaments/behaviors, etc.

2. An acknowledgment of an application will be mailed.  After review, an acceptance or denial acknowledgment will be sent.  The turn around time is usually about 2-3 weeks.  Can vary depending upon how many rescues we currently have in the program.

3. A tentatively approved application is kept in file until a dog becomes available for adoption which will match your 'family profile'. All approved applications are kept on file until a dog is placed with an applicant. We do ask any applicant who subsequently acquired another dog, to notify us in writing so that we may remove that application from our tentatively pending file.

4. Once a rescue Westie is ready for adoption (medical care, rehabilitation and/or retraining), each approved application is then checked to see which family(s) most closely matches the needs of that particular dog.

5. Westie Rescue calls the applicant(s), relays as much background information as possible, and arranges an appointment to meet and see the Westie. It is strongly suggested that all family members attend this 'initial interaction' meeting, along with current family pets, when feasible.

6. After an initial positive interaction meeting, the applicants would be able to adopt that available Westie. The adoption is never 'the next available application name(s) on the list'. Each Westie is carefully placed with the the best suited adoptive family and visa versa.

7. The adoption family signs our 'Adoption Contract' and provides a donation which goes to cover expenses, including costly Veterinarian services including surgery cost, foster care supplies, food, necessary prescription medicine, transportation, phone bills, office supplies, etc. To be universally fair to all program rescues our adoption donation depends upon the age of the rescue. Rescues under 8 yrs of age not over $600, dogs 8+ yrs of age $500 and down. We feel this is a very reasonable donation request since an AKC Westie puppy, purchased from a quality, respected and knowledgeable breeder is $1,800 - $2,500. Puppies have been this price range for well over 5 years now.

8. The Westie and its new family go home with a copy of the Adoption Contract, leash and collar with a temporary Westie Rescue ID tag, diet instructions, toys, medicine/medicated shampoo (if applicable), foster 'case workers' telephone number(s), program directors telephone number(s), training tips and any other necessary items.

9. Westie Rescue, usually the foster 'case worker', makes routine follow-up calls to assure that the rehoming of the Westie is successful. These calls help to resolve any questions or concerns before they become problems.

10. The Westie and adoption family are encouraged to participate in the great fun activities throughout the year sponsored by Westie Rescue of California.

NOTE: Our rescues are placed in loving private foster care homes.  We do not have a 'facility' and/or maintain a shelter.  Visitations are by appointment only.
