Bentley, as a puppy

Bentley with Gidget

TO: SUSAN REEVES, Westie Rescue of California
FROM: BENTLEY LOPEZ
SUBJECT: MY NEW LIFE
DATE: 8/27/2005

Susan, thank you for having taken care of me so well after you rescued me from those people who could not find it in their hearts to love me for my entire life. But, thanks to you I have found a heavenly place that I can call my own.

I live in San Diego, CA in a little part of the city where the sun shines in my very own back yard, which I like to use to run around and chase my little sister, Gidget who is now four wearing the hat on the picture. We play in the back yard, go for walks together and visit the leash free beach in Coronado and the leash free park in Balboa. I love to run around in the park and visit with other four-legged friends. A few of which are Westies themselves. At the beach I love to run into the water and get all wet, sometimes I even drink some of the salty water just for fun. I go for walks with my daddy in the morning and with both my mommy and daddy in the evening, oh yeah sister comes too. We walk all around the neighborhood exploring the scents of the day while at the same time taking care of my business.

I'm learning how to travel in the car so that I may accompany my family on trips. Very recently my first long trip was to Ventura California where I met all of my friends from Westie Rescue CA and we stayed at a dog friendly hotel. So many of us where there to participate in the West Highlander Games, we where the stars and main attraction. Everyone came to see, pet, play, kiss and take pictures with the Westies who where representing my favorite organization, Westie Rescue CA. We where the hit of the weekend.

Let me tell you about my family. I have a wonderful mommy who talks to me and tells me everyday how much she loves me and that this entire house belongs to my sister and me. She hugs me every morning and loves to put me on the bed with her to remind me of how much she loves me. She tells me that I have stolen her heart but not to tell daddy. My daddy is silly and makes me laugh. We spend boy time in the mornings when sister is not with us. We talk about things and he reassures me that no one will ever make me leave my family ever again. I'm afraid of a few things, like walking near water drains, making a mess in the house, not having my own toys or not having enough food. But my daddy makes sure that I always have a toy, its really mommy who buys me a squeaky toy every week. He makes sure that I go outside when ever I feel the urge, even if its 3 AM. I always get treats in the morning and in the evening and when I get scared he carries me while mommy reassures me that nothing will ever hurt me again. Daddy and I are best buddies. Daddy doesn't understand women and neither do I. Sister loves to tease me and sometimes just annoys me, but I love her. She won't come when mommy calls her so I'm sent out to get her and bring her weather at the park or at home. Although she is much faster than I am, I can always round her up.

Then there is my extended family and friends. My uncle Mike and aunt Kathy have give me, two two-legged cousins. McKenna is just 6 months old and Mickey who is going on 28 months who loves to play with sister and I and comes to visit us every Sunday while at Papa Gerry and Aunt (Tanta) Rose's. Including my four-legged cousin Jack who buys us Coach Leather goods and Tanta Rose gets us special treats all of the time. All of the family and friends know how special we are to our family so we get gifts and treat all year around especially from Big Bentley our bulldog friend. Nothing is as special as a grandma who could not wait to see us each day, Grandma Boyle who lives in my heart everyday. Not just for the weekly filet mignon that she used to make for us but for the love that came from her even on the days when her health was not the best. My other "Gramita" Carolina lives in Los Angeles and I get to see her during special holidays. She always gives me little treats when no one is watching. Then there is always my Uncle Pete who baby sits us and plays with us every Sunday when he comes over to dinner. Everyone in our family loves me, oh yeah Gidget too.

I have several places in the house that I enjoy at different times of the day or night. I have a couch that lets me see out the window where I keep watch the comings and goings of the world. I have a bed under the piano where I like to take naps, when sister doesn't take it first. At night I like to lie on this wonderful yellow couch that wraps me all over and keeps me nice and warm. On those days that it's too cold, I sleep under my parents' bed or on a fluffy bed by my daddy's side with my favorite sheepskin. On the weekends, after daddy and I go out for a morning walk. We come back and all get back in bed with mommy and sister to take a nice long nap as a family.

And as they say, that is my family and this is my new life and my own little place in heaven.

Best wishes to all,
Bentley Lopez
